Risk metrics explained

Volatility, beta, Sharpe, Sortino, Calmar and Ulcer — what each one measures, and how to read it.

In one sentence

If drawdown is the picture of the worst path, these metrics compress risk and risk-adjusted return into single numbers. They split in two: higher is better (Sharpe, Sortino, Calmar) and lower is better (volatility, Ulcer). None tells the whole story alone, so always read them next to the drawdown curve. All are computed from daily data over the full history.

(Volatility)

Volatility

How much the price swings on average, annualized (the annualized standard deviation of daily returns). Roughly ~5% for Treasury ETFs, ~15–30% for large caps and indexes, and 50%+ for leveraged ETFs. Higher isn’t automatically bad — it just means bracing for bigger moves, in both directions.

베타 (Beta)

Beta

How much a name moves with the market (S&P 500). 1 means it swings like the market, 1.2+ more than the market, 0.8 or less steadier, and below 0 opposite to it (e.g. inverse ETFs). It helps separate a deep drawdown that is “the market’s doing” (high beta) from a name-specific event.

(Sharpe)

Sharpe ratio

How much return you got per unit of risk (volatility). Roughly below 0 means the risk wasn’t rewarded, ~1 is solid, and 2+ is excellent. Its flaw: it counts upside swings (the good kind) as risk too.

(Sortino)

Sortino ratio

Fixes Sharpe’s flaw by counting only downside volatility. It doesn’t penalize upside swings, so it isolates the “genuinely bad” risk and usually reads higher than Sharpe. Compared side by side, the two hint at whether a name’s swings are mostly up or down.

(Calmar)

Calmar ratio

The annual return divided by the maximum drawdown: how much you earned for enduring the worst fall on record. Because the denominator is the real worst loss rather than volatility, it fits a drawdown-first view especially well.

(Ulcer Index)

Ulcer Index

A “pain” index that captures both the depth and the duration of drawdowns. Unlike volatility it never penalizes upside — it measures only how deep and how long the price sat below its peak. Lower is better. As the name suggests, it puts a number on how much holding it churned your stomach.

Caveats — don’t trust one number

  • Backward-looking — all are computed from past data and don’t guarantee future risk.
  • Cash-like distortion — when volatility is near zero (Treasuries, money funds), Sharpe and Sortino blow up to unrealistic highs (the denominator is ~0). A huge value isn’t a jackpot.
  • One number can’t replace the shape — no metric substitutes for the drawdown curve itself. Always read them with the chart and tables.
