Frequently asked questions
Common questions about drawdown, recovery time, the data and the risk metrics.
What is maximum drawdown (MDD)?
Maximum drawdown (MDD) is the largest peak-to-trough fall an asset has taken from a prior high. It captures how deep the worst stretch was — something a return figure alone never reveals — making it one of the most intuitive measures of risk.
How is recovery time measured?
Recovery time is the number of trading days it took an asset to climb from its maximum-drawdown trough back to a new high. If it has not yet reclaimed the prior peak, it is shown as not recovered.
Where does the data come from, and how often does it update?
Data comes from public sources such as Yahoo Finance. It refreshes automatically every trading day, and every figure is pre-computed with the same module that draws the charts, so the numbers and charts can never disagree. It is not real-time quote data.
Are the figures in USD or KRW?
Both. The default basis is USD, and a currency-adjusted KRW view is also available, so Korean investors can see the drawdown in won terms too.
Is this investment advice?
No. Everything on FinScope is informational only — not a recommendation to buy or sell, and not personalized advice. Past drawdowns do not guarantee future results, and decisions are your own responsibility. See the disclaimer for details.
Which securities are covered?
Over 800 US-listed stocks and ETFs — including large caps, sector and thematic ETFs, index ETFs, bond and Treasury ETFs, leveraged and inverse ETFs, dividend and income ETFs, and crypto-linked names.
What do Sharpe, Sortino, beta and Ulcer mean?
Sharpe is return per unit of total risk (volatility); Sortino counts only downside risk. Beta measures how much a name moves with the market (S&P 500). The Ulcer Index captures the depth and the duration of drawdowns together — a measure of “pain.” Higher is generally better for the first three; lower is better for Ulcer.
Why are leveraged-ETF drawdowns so deep?
A leveraged ETF tracks a multiple (2x, 3x) of its index’s daily return. Over choppy markets, compounding causes volatility decay, so its long-run drawdowns are structurally far deeper than the underlying index. Inverse ETFs decay even faster when markets rise over time.
Is FinScope free? How is it funded?
Yes, it is free. It is funded by Google AdSense advertising and has no affiliation with any broker or asset manager, so there is no incentive to promote particular securities.
