A simple guide
최대낙폭(MDD)이란?What is maximum drawdown (MDD)?
One number that shows the worst drop an investment has ever lived through.
In one sentence
It’s how far a price fell from its all-time high down to the deepest low that followed. In plain terms: “how much you’d have lost buying at the worst possible peak and selling at the bottom.” You rarely trade exactly like that — but it shows, at a glance, the worst pain this asset has put investors through.
Example: a value of $1,000 falling to $450 → (450 − 1,000) ÷ 1,000 = −55%
Where you see it on our pages
The big number at the top of each ticker page is that ticker’s all-time maximum drawdown.
Example: SPY (the US S&P 500 ETF) fell about 55% from its peak during the 2008 crisis — hence −55.2%, with the bottom on 2009-03-09. The card also shows the recovery time from that bottom back to a new high (or “not recovered”) — for SPY, about three and a half years.
The drawdown (“underwater”) chart
The 0% line means a fresh all-time high; the lower it goes, the further the price sits below its last peak. The deep valleys are the big crashes.
The deepest valley is the maximum drawdown (here, −55%), and the red dot marks that bottom. On the live dashboard you can drag across the chart to pick a date range — both the USD and KRW charts snap to it together.

The key-metrics table
The same idea, laid out as numbers. Row by row:
Price | $741.75 |
All-time high | $759.57 |
Current decline from peak | −2.3% |
Max drawdown | −55.2% |
Avg daily drawdown | −9.0% |
- Price · All-time high — today’s price, and the highest price ever reached.
- Decline from peak — how far below the all-time high the price sits right now.
- Max drawdown — the deepest fall in its history. The star of this guide.
- Avg daily drawdown — the day-by-day drawdown, averaged. Shows how underwater it typically sat.
Current drawdown vs worst-ever drawdown
A gauge for how today’s drop compares with this ticker’s all-time maximum drawdown. The left end is a fresh high (0%), the right end is its worst ever (here, −55.2%), and the marker points to the current drawdown.
As of this example (May 2026), SPY is only −2.3% below its peak — almost a fresh high next to its worst-ever −55.2%, so the marker sits at the far left (near the peak). “Deeper before 75%” means the price was deeper than it is now on 75% of past trading days. The closer the marker is to the right (its worst ever), the rarer that depth; the gauge shifts colour across three tiers — near the peak · moderately deep · near its worst.
Drawdown distribution
| 구간Band | 달러 누적 체류 비율Time within (USD) | 조건일Days |
|---|---|---|
| −20.0% | +83.0% | 6,972 |
| −40.0% | +97.1% | 8,153 |
The table’s “time within” column is the share of days the price stayed within that band of its peak. The 83% on the −20.0% row is not “recovered 83%” — it means the price was within 20% of its all-time high on 83% of all trading days (deeper than −20% only 17% of the time). The dashboard’s “time in band” column is the share that sat in just that one slice (e.g. −15% to −20%). Days (6,972) counts the “within 20%” days. The rows climb toward 100% as they deepen because deeper crashes happened only rarely.
Changing the period: the All · 10Y · 5Y · 1Y buttons at the top switch every figure to the worst drop within that window.
Why it matters
A larger (more negative) max drawdown means investors had to stomach a deeper crash in the past. It’s a reality check for “could I hold through a drop this big?” Don’t look at returns alone — look at the worst drawdown too, because selling at the bottom because you couldn’t hold on is the costliest mistake.
