Why adjusted close changes drawdown

Before trusting a drawdown number, know whether the series treats splits and distributions as economic losses.

Short answer

Unless a page says otherwise, FinScope uses split- and dividend-adjusted close. That avoids recording a 2-for-1 split as a false −50% crash and distinguishes a cash distribution from an economic loss. The resulting drawdown can therefore be shallower than a price-only chart.

Example 1 — a split creates a fake crash

A $100 stock completes a 2-for-1 split. Its next close is about $50, but the holder owns twice as many shares; total value is unchanged.

Unadjusted price: (50 − 100) ÷ 100 = −50%  →  false drawdown

An adjusted series restates the old $100 observation to the equivalent $50 unit. The series runs from $50 to $50, so the economic drawdown is 0%. Without that correction, frequently split stocks would show absurdly deep historical MDDs.

Example 2 — an ex-dividend drop mixes loss with a cash transfer

If a $100 ETF distributes $5 and opens near $95, a price-only series reports −5%. The holder, however, received $5 in cash. Adjusted close accounts for that distribution and more closely represents the change in economic value.

Adjusted close is not your personal after-tax account return: it does not reproduce your taxes, trading costs, or exact reinvestment timing. Read it as a standardized series that accounts for distributions.

Choose the series that answers the question

  • Economic drawdown for a long-term holder — adjusted close is usually the better fit.
  • How far the quoted share price fell — inspect unadjusted close or a price-return index.
  • Your actual account result — use your trades, taxes, fees and reinvestment history.
  • Why two sites disagree on MDD — first compare adjustment method, start date, close versus intraday low, and currency.

What to verify on FinScope

Each ticker page states its data date and adjusted-close basis. If a corporate-action adjustment looks wrong, inspect the jump date, the split/distribution history, and continuity before and after the event, then submit a correction report.
