Tesla Stock Drops 14.5%: Why 26% Revenue Growth Wasn’t Enough

Tesla reported second-quarter results after the market closed on July 22, 2026. TSLA then fell 14.5% the next day. Revenue rose 26% and second-quarter deliveries set a record, but operating margin dropped to 1.4% and free cash flow turned negative.

The selloff was less about whether Tesla could grow and more about the cost of that growth. Investors refocused on how much profit and cash remain after expanding vehicle output and funding AI, robotaxi, Cybercab, and Optimus projects.

How severe was the drop?

TSLA fell from $374.01 on July 22 to $319.69 on July 23 in FinScope’s adjusted daily series, a 14.52% close-to-close loss. Among 4,040 daily returns observed from June 29, 2010 through July 23, 2026, it ranked as the ninth-worst decline.

The Nasdaq Composite lost 2.15% and QQQ fell 1.90% on July 23. Broad technology weakness amplified the move, but Tesla’s much larger decline points to a company-specific post-earnings repricing.

FinScope data currently ends on July 23. Yahoo Finance shows a July 24 close of $313.03, another 2.08% decline and a two-session loss of 16.30% from the July 22 close. That newer close is treated as a separate external observation, not as part of the FinScope series used for the historical ranking below.

Q2 showed growth and deterioration at the same time

Metric Q2 2026 Q2 2025 YoY
Vehicle deliveries 480,126 384,122 +25%
Revenue $28.236B $22.496B +26%
Total gross margin 16.8% 17.2% -0.4 pp
Operating expenses $4.353B $2.955B +47%
Operating income $0.398B $0.923B -57%
Operating margin 1.4% 4.1% -2.7 pp
Non-GAAP diluted EPS $0.33 $0.40 -18%
Capital expenditures $5.789B $2.394B +142%
Free cash flow -$1.092B $0.146B Turned negative

Deliveries and revenue grew rapidly, but operating expenses grew faster and operating income fell by more than half. Tesla attributed the pressure to a lower average selling price, lower regulatory credit revenue, higher energy warranty charges, and increased spending on AI and other R&D projects, stock-based compensation, and SG&A.

Automotive regulatory credit revenue fell 67%, from $439M to $146M. R&D expense rose about 49%, from $1.589B to $2.371B.

Why the stock fell despite higher revenue

First, the quality of growth weakened. Higher deliveries lifted revenue, but operating margin compressed to 1.4%. The market focused more on the profit retained from each dollar of revenue than on the 26% top-line increase.

Second, AI investment became a cash-flow burden in the current quarter. Tesla began Cybercab production and continued expanding robotaxi, Optimus, and AI infrastructure. Q2 capital expenditures reached $5.789B, up 142% year over year, while free cash flow fell to -$1.092B. Tesla now expects more than $25B of capital expenditures in 2026.

Third, record deliveries were not enough to validate the valuation placed on future AI and autonomy profits. Investors now need clearer evidence that robotaxi miles, FSD subscriptions, and Cybercab output can translate into gross profit, operating income, and cash. Reuters also reported a more cautious post-earnings market tone toward Tesla’s robotaxi story.

The current decline is not Tesla’s historical maximum drawdown

At the July 23 FinScope close, TSLA was 34.7% below its December 16, 2025 high of $489.88. Applying the separate July 24 Yahoo close deepens the decline to 36.1% and implies a 56.5% gain would be required to reclaim that peak.

Tesla’s observed maximum drawdown remains 73.6%, from the November 4, 2021 peak to the January 3, 2023 trough. That prior peak was not recovered until December 11, 2024.

A 14.5% daily loss, a 34.7% current decline from peak, and a 73.6% historical maximum drawdown measure different things. The daily return captures speed, the current decline captures today’s underwater depth, and maximum drawdown captures the worst full loss cycle in the observed history.

What to watch next

Operating margin is the first test. Delivery growth will provide less support if lower pricing, weaker regulatory credit revenue, and rising warranty or operating costs keep margins compressed.

Free cash flow comes next. Tesla ended Q2 with $43.524B in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, but the gap between quarterly capital spending and operating cash flow now matters more as AI projects scale.

The longer-term judgment will depend on monetization. Robotaxi coverage, paid miles, FSD subscriptions, and Cybercab output are operating milestones. Investors will also need to see when those milestones begin contributing meaningful gross profit and operating income.

Data basis and limitations

Price history, the daily-return ranking, the peak, maximum drawdown, and recovery date use FinScope’s adjusted daily series through July 23, 2026. July 24 prices and index comparisons come from a separate Yahoo Finance query. Calculations that append that external close are labeled separately and are not presented as FinScope precomputed statistics.

Financial figures come from Tesla’s Q2 2026 earnings exhibit filed on Form 8-K and its Form 10-Q. Forward-looking AI, autonomy, manufacturing, and regulatory outcomes remain uncertain.
